Brazil is a birders’ paradise. These magnificent hyacinth macaws are just one of the many species we find during our photo tour to the Pantanal for jaguars. Yes, the main event is the cats, but the birds often steal the show for me.
Unfortunately, like many other animals, these birds are considered “Vulnerable” by the IUCN, with only 6,500 to 7,000 remaining in the wild. Their biggest threat is the loss of habitat, specifically large, old-growth forests that contain trees large enough for their nest cavities. They’re the largest parrot in the world, reaching up to one meter in length and more than one and a half meters in wingspan. Large birds require large trees to build their nests in.
