A Tribute to Dan and Tanya from Fred Kurtz

Posted Mar. 29th, 2016 by Fred Kurtz

Simply Dan and Tanya

As I start my 10th year traveling with Dan and Tanya, I wanted to make a tribute book that contains nothing but images of the two of them with fellow explorers. I first met Dan and Tanya in August 2007 on a Mentor Series photo tour of Iceland and Norway. In 2008, Yellowstone in Winter was my first Natural Exposures Invitational Photo tour, and in February 2016, I completed my 12th Natural Exposures Invitational Photo tour – again in Yellowstone.

This book chronicles almost 10 years of Dan and Tanya and their journey creating Natural Exposures Invitational Photo Tours. It also shows the wonderful bond between the two of them and the impact they have on all the people they touch.

While I started out simply as a client, friendship soon followed, and now we are just like family. I tease them often that I am their adopted son even though I am older. Dan and Tanya are two of the nicest people I have ever met, and I will be forever grateful to them.

I will never forget the very first time I met Tanya. I arrived in Iceland for my first ever photography tour. I was a day late and exhausted. She saw me checking in at the hotel desk and said, “Are you Fred Kurtz? We are leaving for a shoot in five minutes.” The rest is history…

P.S. Dan and Tanya, you will receive a hard copy of the book direct from Blurb by April 11th.

Freddy, what a cool idea. I’ll just add that I’ve also been chasing D&T around the globe since Norway 2007. I loved them then and love them 10 NE trips later. Here is a toast to 10 more!

Sue, you actually met them one day before I did since I was a day late in Norway. I just now realized this. I am so glad we started this journey together. Dan and Tanya have changed our lives – for the better.

Dan/Tan is an incomparable team. Having traveled with several other “photo tour” groups over the years I can write with confidence and authority that Dan/Tan is simply the best. They not only provide an unparalleled instructional environment, but they take you to the most beautiful and inspiring locations on earth to do so. They win the Academy Award, Emmy, and Grammy for photo adventure tours. But, the truly magnificent thing about Dan/Tan (sorry, but I cannot separate them although as individuals they are both amazing) is that they are really, really nice people. They care so much about the world and all its critters that they infect all those fortunate enough to travel with them with their spirit and enthusiasm. Fred’s tribute to them, no matter how well accomplished (I have seen Fred’s work and it is fabulous so the book will certainly be great), there is no way to capture on paper or screen just how terrific Dan and Tanya are. If this comes across as too “fan boy” then, I plead guilty. To have had the chance to spend time with and learn from them has made me not only a better photographer, but also a better person. 😉 And, for those who might read this who have not joined Dan/Tan on an adventure, stop reading and sign up for a trip today! You will be forever enriched for doing so.

Freddy, you are way to kind but we love you for it. For those who don’t know Fred Kurtz, this book is a prime example of his incredible generosity, talent as a photographer and playful nature. Make you all check out his many other books to see his terrific talent as a photographer. Thats Freddy, you are a very dear friend!

And you are a dear friend too Dan. You and Tanya are very important to me and make me a better person. I am so glad I got to know both of you. Photography is not only about the destination and getting the shots – it is about lifelong friendships.
