About this expedition

Rolling wheat fields, family farms, and photogenic pastoral panoramas will fill your viewfinders on this trip to the incredible landscape of the Palouse region of southeastern Washington and north central Idaho.

Join Daniel J. Cox and Wolfgang Kaehler for this weeklong workshop of photo shoots and digital sessions to experience and capture this disappearing region.

A leisurely drive along the gently curving Palouse Scenic Byway provides opportunities to photograph peculiar and picturesque silt dunes that characterize the Palouse Prairie, expansive farmlands, recreational sites, small towns, and world-class universities.  This is an area rich in cultural history, small town charm, and spectacular scenic vistas.

Itinerary

This workshop represents an incredible opportunity to photograph a remarkable part of America, while learning to capture better images, manage and optimize those images, and share those images with others.

Palouse Combined 2

Thursday, June 18 – Monday, June 22 (B, L, D)

Everyday is different in Palouse. While the area enjoys a mild climate, we will use the day’s weather to determine where we go and what we see. Part of the fun of photographing Palouse is you’re never sure what you’re going to see. Flexibility is key in getting the best light and the best shots.

Each day we’ll set out together in vans, visiting some of the best photographic subjects in the area. Usually we have a morning full of great photography, we’ll get lunch, and then return to the hotel for a digital classroom lesson. In the late afternoon, we’ll head out for more photography followed by a group dinner.

Along the we may have the opportunity to photograph rolling hills saturated with color. Brilliant yellow canola flowers contrast with the pale green hills of wheat and lentils.

Wildflowers dot the hillside adding pinks, purples, and blues to the mix. Silvered barns long abandoned to rough-legged hawks and their prey are interspersed with freshly painted and restored barns in manicured fields. We’ll photograph charming, old farm equipment in these iconic scenes.

We’ll drive to the top of Steptoe Butte, a quartzite butte, which provides aerial-like photo opportunities without ever leaving the ground. From the 3,618-foot summit, we’ll take in spectacular panoramic views of the miles and miles of the stunningly cultivated Palouse farmlands.

Eleven communities populate the Scenic Byway, each with its own distinct history and charm. The region also enjoys a variety of eating and shopping establishments and the amenities of a major university.

Wolfgang knows the area well and will make sure we find the best photography sights the area has to offer. Each day will be planned around weather and light. All guests have to be flexible with the schedule!

Tuesday, June 23 (B)

After breakfast, we say goodbye to each other and the rolling wheat fields that are the signature of this scenic area. A transfer to Spokane is provided after breakfast for those who need it.
