Greenland Full Moon Red Sails Photography Tour
An Arctic photography journey timed for Greenland’s evocative light.
2027 Greenland Full Moon Red Sails Photography Tour Travel Plans
Tuesday, August 17
Welcome to Greenland—Land of the Midnight Sun!
Arrive in Ilulissat in the afternoon (around 1:00 PM recommended), but no later than 5:00 PM. Upon arrival, transfer to the 4-star Hotel Arctic (or similar) to settle in and unwind.
Note: If you wish to book pre-/post-nights at the hotel in Ilulissat, please let us know ASAP, since hotel space is limited during this time of year.
In the early evening, we’ll gather as a group for a short briefing before boarding our two private vessels. This is the perfect time to begin our expedition—just as the sun kisses the horizon, casting a magical palette of colors across the towering icebergs of Disko Bay. As twilight deepens, the full moon rises above the icy seascape, adding a soft, silver glow to the poetic scene—a rare and unforgettable backdrop for our first night on the water.
Later in the evening, after the shoot, we’ll return to the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Arctic (or similar) for five nights
Wednesday, August 18 – Saturday, August 21 (4B)
Days in Ilulissat
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.
Since we return late each evening, the daytime hours are ideal for resting, recharging, preparing your gear, and planning for the evening shoot. It’s also a great time to review images, refine techniques, and participate in feedback sessions—either individually or as a group.
Optional Scenic Hike
On one of the days, we’ll set out on an (optional) scenic hike to photograph one of the area’s most iconic glacier viewpoints. The route begins just outside town, following a well-maintained wooden path across gentle slopes and open Arctic landscapes. This is a perfect opportunity to capture dramatic vistas and connect with Greenland’s raw natural beauty.
Explore Ilulissat and Local Culture
If you’re feeling energetic, take the opportunity to explore the coastal town of Ilulissat, also known as Jakobshavn. Nestled along the Ilulissat Icefjord—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—this Arctic community is often called the “Iceberg Capital of the World.” Its colorful buildings and fences, painted in vibrant reds, greens, blues, and yellows, make it incredibly photogenic.
Visit the local museums to dive into the region’s rich history, browse shops featuring Greenlandic handicrafts, or sample local specialties at one of the town’s many cozy cafes and restaurants. Ilulissat is also known for its sled dogs, a living symbol of Greenlandic culture and tradition. These hardy dogs have long served as an essential means of transportation across snow and ice, and remain an enduring part of daily life in the Arctic. For those interested, visits to local sled dog kennels are sometimes available through independent operators in town and can be arranged on your own.
Evenings on the Icefjord
Our evenings are dedicated to sailing through the Ilulissat Icefjord and Disko Bay, the outflow of the renowned Jakobshavn Glacier (Greenlandic: Sermeq Kujalleq). This glacier is famous for its dramatic ice flow and frequent calving events, which give rise to a constantly shifting seascape of sculpted icebergs. Towering and fragmented, smooth and jagged — the icebergs appear in a stunning array of shapes and sizes, a stark contrast with the still waters of the fjord.
The sky glows this time of year, with the sun hovering at or just below the horizon for nearly five hours. Golden reds, pastel pinks, and icy blues stretch across the sea and reflect off the water, creating a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of an extended Golden Hour, an extraordinary canvas for photography. To enhance our compositions even further, red sailboats will be positioned among the icebergs, offering striking color contrasts against the polar landscape. And if we’re lucky, fog may roll in, cloaking the scene in a soft, moody haze that adds depth and drama to every frame.
Village Visits and Wildlife Watching
We’ll also have the opportunity to visit several Greenlandic settlements, including Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat, and Oqaatsut— each with its own character, culture, and charm. While wildlife is not the central focus of our time on the water, we’ll keep an eye out for humpback whales and a variety of Arctic seals, including the Kangia ringed, harp, bearded, hooded, and harbor seals.
This expedition promises not just remarkable images, but an unforgettable experience of light, land, and life at the edge of the Arctic world.
Sunday, August 22 (B)
It’s our final day together in Greenland. We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel, take a last look at the unforgettable Arctic surroundings, and say our goodbyes before transferring to the airport for our flights home.
Note: Pre/post-tour destinations, like Iceland, may be available. Please inquire for details.
