The Northern Pygmy Owl
This collection of images are a few of the out-takes I've selected that did not appear in the current June/July 2009 issue of National Wildlife magazine. I worked for nearly four different summers on these little birds. They were extremely difficult to photograph due to their size and speed. Many, many hours were spent in a tree blind 30-40 feet in the air waiting for the male to bring food back to his mate sitting in the tree cavity with her newly hatched chicks. Wildlife photography is always a team effort and none of this could have been done without my good friend Denver Holt of the Owl Research Institute and Graham Frey of the Rocky Mountain Front Institute of Natural History. They appear first as an appreciation for all their help.
