About two-thirds, approximately 57,000 individuals, of the global beluga whale population summers in the waters of Hudson Bay. I photographed this small pod of belugas while working with Kieran McIver and Polar Bears International. For many summers, Kieran captained the beluga boat that provided streaming video of the whales being whales, capturing behavior, skin health, and ecosystem changes driven by melting Arctic sea ice. Along with the belugas, I also found several polar bears, one family of moms and cubs.
