Fishing the Firehole
This image of our national bird, the Bald Eagle, was captured in Yellowstone National Park on one of our Winter in Yellowstone trips. This beautiful bird was fishing the Firehole River. Bald Eagles are almost common nowadays, but that wasn’t always the case. In the late 20th century, they were on the brink of extinction in the lower 48 contiguous states. The pesticide DDT was mainly to blame, but so was illegal hunting.
Their recovery was explicitly due to the Endangered Species Act. Without that government program, these wonderful birds would most likely be gone. But as it is, they seem to be thriving—a big shout-out to the Federal Government for protecting this majestic species.
