Calling the Pack

By Daniel J. Cox

Calling the Pack Natural Note

A member of Yellowstone National Park’s Wapiti Lake pack pauses on the hillside to call fellow pack members. Wolves were reintroduced back to Yellowstone in the mid-90s’ after having been exterminated from the Park in the early 1900s. In December 2021, there were approximately 95 wolves in the Park and 500+ wolves in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem overall.

This lone wolf found me on my way back to Mammoth after a day of photography in the Lamar Valley. People often tell me they want to go to Yellowstone to photograph wolves, but planning to do so is virtually impossible. When in Yellowstone, you don’t find the wolves, the wolves find you. You can help support the wolves and their habitat by donating to the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
