Flying Fox

By Daniel J. Cox

Flying Fox Natural Note

In celebration of Halloween I wanted to share this image of a flying fox, a species that is part of the family known as megabats. They are also known as fruit bats. When you see them up close, you can certainly see the resemblance to the face of a fox.

Megabats are found in tropical and subtropical areas of Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania. I saw my first flying foxes along the coast in Cannes, Australia in 1996 and have found them in many other countries since. Climate change is having a disastrous effect on these animals. Heat exhaustion has killed thousands of them in Australia including 107,000 in 2014 and 33,000 in 2018.

This image was taken in Madagascar on one of our last photo tours there.
