Giant Canada Geese

By Daniel J. Cox

Giant Canada Geese Natural Note

A flock of giant Canada geese take off from Silver Lake in Rochester, Minnesota, on a morning where temperatures dropped below -25°F. The lake was warmed during winter by a coal-fired power plant that pumped warm water into the lake. With open water, ducks and geese were encouraged to spend the entire winter there.

I shot this image around the ripe old age of 19 or 20, 40+ years ago. The elements in this image may no longer exist. The coal-fired power plant that kept the lake open was retired in 2015 due to the inability to compete with wind and solar. Without the power plant, I have no idea if the geese still spend their winters on Silver Lake.

The giant Canada goose, the largest subspecies of all Canada geese, was declared extinct in the 1950s. However, a small population was rediscovered in Rochester in 1962, and their numbers have increased ever since.
