Giant’s Causeway Sunset

By Daniel J. Cox

Giant's Causeway Sunset Natural Note

The sun sets over the basalt columns of Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. This beautiful and unique volcanic feature was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and shortly thereafter declared one of Ireland’s Nature Reserves.

This unusual rock formation inspired the imaginations of early settlers. According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by the giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool) to allow him to take part in a fight with the Scottish giant Benandonner. There are two endings to this story, both too long to write about here, but you can click on this Giant’s Causeway link to find out more.
