Walking through the tranquil woodlands in Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, we stumbled upon this fairyland scene carpeting the forest floor. My initial thought was it’s just a garden of flowers, but my friend Luka Esenko informed me, “No, it’s wild garlic.” I absolutely love garlic, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would find it growing freely outside the hand of man.
Croatia is so much wilder than I ever imagined. In fact, the Baltic regions of Europe still have areas that remind me of the forested regions in Montana and Canada. On this same trip, I also visited Slovenia and experienced an animal I never thought I would get to see,let alone photograph, the European brown bear. Make sure you check out the calendar to view my wild Eurasian brown bear image.
My ongoing exploration of Europe has given me hope that even with a lot of people, animals and wild places can still survive. I’m hopeful we can do the same throughout North America and continue to support our National Parks, wilderness areas, BLM, and other public places. Without these public lands it just wouldn’t be America.
Help support our public lands through any of these great organizations:
The Wilderness Society
National Wildlife Federation
The Trust for Public Land
Patagonia
