One of the great success stories in all of wildlife conservation is our National Wildlife Refuge System. This image of a snow goose flying into its morning pond was shot last week at one of my favorites, Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico.
In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law the Pittman-Robertson Act, inspired by the demise of the passenger pigeon. Thankfully our government understood that without places for wild creatures, they might all go extinct, just like the passenger pigeon.
The Pittman-Robertson Act collects 11% of the sale of all firearms and ammunition purchased by hunters in the U.S. This money goes specifically to our National Wildlife Refuge System to continue to purchase and manage public lands for the benefit of all wildlife and nature enthusiasts alike. We can all support our National Wildlife Refuge System by purchasing a Federal Duck Stamp each year, another way the refuge system is funded.
