Last Tree Standing

By Daniel J. Cox

Last Tree Standing Natural Note

Tovolah Michael Cyrille, chief of Madagascar’s Andranokoditra village, stands next to tree #1127 (scientifically known as Humbertiodendron saboureaui leandri), thought to be the last tree of its kind. My travels to some of the world’s most unique and endangered ecosystems sometimes present opportunities I feel are important to share with the world. I mean, how often can you see, touch, and smell a species about to go extinct?

Chief Tovolah has taken it upon himself to watch this tree, doing his best to protect it from illegal logging. Will he succeed? Only time will tell, but it helps that #1127 isn’t perfectly straight/arrow-like in appearance. Imagine that, imperfection being the only reason you’re still alive.

Help protect Madagascar’s habitat by supporting the Lemur Conservation Network. Cute and cuddly animals, like lemurs, get all the attention, but equally important is their habitat. Lemurs need trees. Save the lemurs and you save the trees. It’s that simple.
