We had come to see the one of the world’s deepest gorges, Fish River Canyon, second only to the Grand Canyon in the United States, when we spotted this group of rosy-faced lovebirds. They flew into a watering hole near our lodge in Namibia’s Namib Desert.
The incredibly arid landscape of the Namib Desert is hard to comprehend. Hundreds and hundreds of miles of sand, rocky soil, and habitat are seemingly void of any vegetation. These colorful, diminutive lovebirds were a welcome sight to an otherwise drab and colorless landscape.
Like many parrots, lovebirds are a popular animal for illegal trade. You can find out more regarding the illegal parrot trade by visiting World Parrot Trust. Support their efforts to help keep all African parrots and other popular bird species wild and free.
