Rocky Mountain Red

By Daniel J. Cox

Rocky Mountain Red Natural Note

This red fox, officially known as the Rocky Mountain red fox, is hunting the semi-exposed ridges of Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park. His midair leap is a typical hunting technique,he jumps into the air and then dives headfirst into the snow to grab a small rodent in the grasses of the frozen landscape.

Red foxes typically live three to seven years in the wild but have been known to live for as long as 11 years in Yellowstone. This high altitude habitat with its many miles of forest edge and extensive semi-open and canyon areas is perfect for this nocturnal animal that is constantly hunting for its next meal.

I shot a series of this hunt using the LUMIX G85 and Leica 100-400mm during our recent Winter in Yellowstone Photo Tour. View more images on this month’s calendar.

Support the Yellowstone ecosystem, this red fox, and all the other amazing animals that call this habitat home by donating to Yellowstone Forever.
