Grévy’s Beneath Mount Kenya

By Daniel J. Cox

Grévy's Beneath Mount Kenya Natural Note

Mount Kenya rises to a height of 17,000 feet above the plains of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy where these Grévy’s zebras graze. This serene scene belies the difficulties these beautiful animals face. The Grévy’s zebra is one of the most endangered animals on Earth; only 2,000 remain today. Equally disturbing is the fact Mount Kenya is no longer capped with glaciers as it was just 20 years ago when I first started coming to Kenya.

Mount Kenya, the second tallest mountain in Africa, supplies water to many of Kenya’s people and wildlife. As the climate warms,2016 being the hottest year on record, water sources will disappear. Kenya this year is the driest I’ve ever seen, but thankfully as I write this from my tent in Masai Mara National Reserve, the rain has come and we’re taking the morning off.

As always, this Natural Note is meant to educate and inspire. You can find out more by visiting the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy website and donating to one of the best in the conservation business.
