This family of ring-tailed lemurs cuddles to stay warm during a cool morning in the private Berenty Reserve of Madagascar. Their home is a very small portion of the original forest, consisting now of only 500 acres, that runs along the Mandrare River.
Madagascar’s plants and wildlife are losing habitat quickly. Between 1950 and 1985, one-half of Madagascar’s forests disappeared, and only around 10% of these forests remain today. This habitat houses more than 250,000 species of plants and animals, or 5% of the world’s total species.
I first visited Madagascar in 1996 and fell in love with the unique diversity of plants and animals. Help support conservation in Madagascar by donating to durrell.org. This lemur family will be eternally grateful.
