Leica 50-200mm Coming Soon?

Posted Feb. 24th, 2018 by Daniel J. Cox

Back in September 2016 I wrote about Panasonic announcing several new products. One of those new products was a Leica 50-200mm F/2.8-4.0 zoom which I was ecstatic about. Unfortunately it’s been a long time in coming, but the folks over at 43Rumors are suggesting our wait may be nearly over.

I truly hope so. I believe this lens will be at least as popular in sales as my current favorite telephoto, the Leica 100-400mm. As long as it’s quality Leica glass and MUCH, MUCH sharper than the current Vario 45-200mm, this should be a huge success. I’m even hopeful that being a bit less glass than the Leica 100-400mm, it will even surpass the image quality we get from that lens. It should, in theory, even surpass what is currently available in this range from Canon and Nikon. That’s who Lumix is competing with. This lens will give us the 100-400mm full frame equivalent with a much smaller size and hopefully even better image quality. If this lens is as good as it should be, it will be another huge home run for the Lumix team. I can’t wait to give it a test.

Perhaps not always first, but frequently the best! Your reviews/evaluations are always worth waiting for. Hope your trip visiting the big fuzzy white (cream-colored?) kids is productive, instructive, and, above all, safe!

If this has the level of performance you’re expecting, I will be buying one. It fulfills my need for a great hiking and travel lens. I’m sure there will be many others looking at it the same way.

It’ll be interesting to compare the Pany 50-200 with it’s variable aperture to the Oly 40-150 with a fixed f2.8; and, I’ll bet you are one of the first photographers to get such a comparison up on the internet! Looking forward to that!

The pressure is on now Dean ?. I have to admit I’m not always the first but that’s because I’m always on the road actually shooting this gear. I was actually thinking about this exact issue, trying to be first, this morning. As much as I appreciate your confidence about my speed many others often beat me to the punch. However, I’m hopeful that other realize that what I offer is the fact I actually use this stuff for real projects. I’m on my way to Svalbard Norway this Wednesday for a shoot for Polar Bears International and I’ll be using the new G9. I’m hopeful to differentiate myself from all the others by having actual projects I use this gear for. That said, I have the Olympus waiting in the wings for a comparison shoot with the new 50-200mm when it arrives. Have no idea when that will be since I’ve not heard a word other than what I read on 43Rumors. We shall see. Thanks for joining the conversation.
