Amazing Samples Shot with Lumix G9 Showing Up

I’m just getting out of the wilds of Madagascar and seeing lots of blog posts, Facebook posts, etc., highlighting samples of the recently announced Panasonic Lumix G9. One particular post that caught my attention is from sports shooter Ian Cook who shared the images below that he shot at a recent rugby match. You can see Ian’s original post on the Lumix G9 Users Group. The image I’ve included here is a screenshot of what Ian has on the Facebook page. The bottom image is a cropped version of the original above. Looks more than impressive. The lens used was the new Leica 200mm F/2.8 (400mm F/2.8 equivalent).

Looking forward to getting one of these new beasts to run tests with. I’ve been told I’ll have one in early December. Hope it’s there when I arrive in Montana in two days. Stay tuned.

First of all it is a high tackle. Good quality but not exceptional. Difficult to judge on that sort of visual test though.

Alain, with all due respect I think you may want to have your eyes checked. Just my two cents.

Hi Dan, Waiting to hear if you have the new G9. Please advise when you have done your testing.

Hi Joel, I had a chance to get a pre-production model but had to turn it down due to be out of the country for the past three months. I’m hoping to have one no later than mid December. Planning to take it to Bosque del Apache which will give me lots of opportunities to test it’s Predictive AF capabilities.

Hopefully the sensor readout is fast enough (faster than on the gh5) so we can use the electronic shutter for fast action and with artificial lightning. Would it be possible for you to test that too when you get your hands on it? Thanks, looking forward to your review.

Iva, what do you mean by, “fast action with artificial light?” You thinking about a football game at night or something similar? Let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

      Hi Dan,
I just meant that i’d like for the sensor readout to be fast enough so we can use the electronic shutter in every situation.
I know with my G85 we’re not quite there, and i see rolling shutter when using the e-shutter while panning, or with birds’ wings moving. Also, I get banding when i use the e-shutter with some kinds of artificial light.

It would be super cool if the G9 was a bit better in all those situations as i’d like to take full advantage of the amazing blackout free 20fps with fast moving subjects or while panning and get images with no distortion.

Ivan, thanks for the additional info. I have to admit that I seldom use the electronic shutter. I’m kind of an old-fashioned like to hear the camera click kind of guy. So I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and experiences on this subject. They all sound fair and reasonable and great addition to any Lumix camera. This kind of feedback is why I really appreciate the interaction we get from folks like you here on the Blog. Thaks for taking the time to add your voice.
