Time Magazine Features Dan’s Photo on the Cover
One of the first long term projects I ever produced involved documenting the life history of whitetail deer. Much of that work was published in the form of a coffee table sized book titled Whitetail Country back in 1987. I’ve since moved on chronicling the lives of many different animals but thankfully my work with whitetails lives on and was recently featured on the cover of the December 9th issue of Time magazine.
Sadly, the story is about how these beautiful animals have prospered to the point of becoming a pest in the minds of many people. Part of the reason Whitetail Country sold over 150,000 copies was due to the popularity of the book with hunters and also suburban residents that wanted to know more about these wonderful creatures that many people saw in their local parks and woodlands. A big thank you to Myles Little, associate Photo Editor, who agreed to make sure they ran a proper credit line that included the my name along with our agent Getty Images. So many publications today are only giving credit to the agent. Thank you Myles.

Congrats, Dan! I don’t subscribe to TIME but my brother-in-law does so I got to take a look. Your image is gorgeous, and the full cover credit is well-deserved. As a former magazine art director, I can’t imagine NOT crediting the photographer, but as you say, things are changing for creatives everywhere.
BTW, I find it interesting how they counter-intuitively used the single, lonely animal with the “pest” idea. And I love that hazy “glow” in the background; was that in the original shot?
Again, congrats for this major recognition of your wonderful work. And… Happy New Year!

Thanks for the kinds words Harald. Yes, the image shown on the cover was all real. Northern Minnesota where I’ve done much of my whitetail work can be humid and hazy. Hard for some people to believe but that image was on a humid, summer morning many years ago actually. Be well and stay in touch.

Congratulations, Dan! That is fantastic. I just saw that issue on the news stands and was curious about the article, mostly because that photo really caught my eye. I will definitely pick up a copy now. And thanks for taking the extra step for your credit, and the future credits of other photographers. Getting published is hard enough without losing your credit below the photo. Thanks and congrats again!

My sincere congratulations on your recent cover image for Time Magazine !
You probably don’t remember me but we met many years ago in San Francisco for breakfast as you prepared for one of your first presentations on a Popular Photography Mentor Series Photo Tour. Since that meeting, I’ve had a cover on the American Butterfly Association Magazine, a grand prize and first prize wildlife category win in the Nature’s Best Competition and have been a five time semi finalist in the BBC Wildlife Photographer Competition.
Maybe I learned a thing or two from you…thanks & again, congrats and happy holidays!

Good for you, what an excellent shot, you have to be so proud. I’m happy that you were credited. That’s such a good sign. I’m not a professional photographer but had my images used by a top magazine online, without credit. Fortunately they fixed it, but had it been a printed magazine, it would have been too late. It’s so important.
Daniel J. CoxOn Dec. 11th, 2013
Nancy, thanks for your input and your story about making sure you were credited for your work. I applaud you for sticking up for what is right and fair. Keep up your support for all photographers by sticking to your guns on this issue and speaking out when Editors forget who it is that creates the work they depend on.

Congratulations on the cover Dan! so awesome!! Equally awesome is all the work and diligence you do both to raise awareness and to help fight for photographer/artist’s rights. I so appreciate all that you do!

Thank you Christine. Hope you’re getting some time to shoot.

Congratulations on your cover and I am glad to hear you had the foresight to make sure that TIME put your name with the photo credit. Years ago the publications would actually send you a free copy when you had something published.
Daniel J. CoxOn Dec. 4th, 2013
Thanks for the nice words David. I’m doing what I can to help stop the recently adopted acceptance of not crediting the photographer. Our agents are as much at fault as anyone in the publishing industry. I was grateful for the the positive response by Myles Little at Time.
Daniel J. CoxOn Dec. 11th, 2013
David, Time has been more than professional on this issue. The Editor was happy to make sure he credited us and he even wrote me a note to make sure I knew he was on my side. They have also sent me five copies for my portfolio. I applaud Myles Little of Time for doing what is Fair and Right.
