September 4th - 10th, 2018

2018 Alaska Brown Bear Boat Photography Tour – Daniel has photographed grizzlies in the wild for well over a decade. His guidance and experience give guests opportunities to take their own amazing images. We invite you to join us in the exceptional bear viewing location of Kodiak Island. No viewing platforms are used. Peaceful encounters with these magnificent giants of the north, there is nothing more exhilarating than photographing these bears! We’ll photograph mothers with their playful cubs and male bears feeding on and running after salmon in the rivers. Feel free to throw in a line to fish for halibut, pollock, and cod. Our goal is for each person to go home with incredible photos, new photography tips, and the memories of an experience of a lifetime. All aboard!

    Thursday, September 6 – Sunday, September 9 (B, L, D)

Bear viewing along the shores of Katmai. We’ll start each day with a hearty breakfast and then board our skiffs and head for the shoreline. Once on shore, we’ll travel by foot in small groups to observe and photograph bears in the magnificent mountain scenery and fall foliage that surrounds us. The bears usually appear to be somewhat lethargic and rarely notice our presence, however, the cubs can be quite inquisitive and sometimes get very close. We’ll observe their many entertaining behaviors such as scratching, rolling, and playing—you never know what they will do! This is prime time for photographing males running after and feeding on chum (dog) and late sockeye (red) salmon. We may also have the opportunity to photograph eagles, belted kingfishers, sea otters, red fox, and if we are lucky a moose or wolf.  Lunch will be served onboard. We’ll venture out again after lunch and follow the bears by boat or on land by foot and return to the vessel for a hearty dinner—fresh halibut might be on the menu! After dinner, we’ll plan on getting a good night’s sleep so we have plenty of energy to photograph bears the next day. Daily excursions to the bears will depend on the weather. Fishing off the boat is an option during the trip; halibut, pollock, and cod are the most common in these parts. We’ll provide additional details about fishing closer to trip time.

    Monday, September 10 (B)

After breakfast, we’ll return by float plane to Kodiak. We highly recommend a late day flight from Kodiak in case of bad weather delays during the morning float plane flight. We’ll have a day room in Kodiak for the group to relax in until your evening flight departs for Anchorage for your flight home.

  • Helpful Information for 2018 Alaska Brown Bear Boat Photography Tour

This trip is addictive—once you have done it, you will know why! There is nothing like being on a boat along the coast of Alaska in the summer under the midnight sun with beautiful glacial mountain scenery and bears. A little fishing between bear viewing will completes your Alaska experience!

Guests must be able to walk short to moderate distances on uneven ground/wet tidal flats, get in and out of boats, and wade through low water with their camera packs. Sometimes the walks are short, and at other times the walk could be up to 1/4 mile; it depends how far the bears are out in the meadows. When we encounter the bears, we’ll walk together slowly as a group. The bears are accustomed to human encounters. Caution and patience is always needed to photograph bears in the wild.

Knee high rubber boots/hip waders will be needed, and bring boat shoes or slippers for onboard the boat.

Daniel will phone each guest personally prior to trip time to discuss camera gear and make suggestions for what to bring. You can visit Dan’s Gear for the Brown Bear Photography Adventure blog post for additional information.

Licenses can be purchased in Kodiak. Aside from incredible bear viewing, there will be an opportunity to fish for halibut, pollock, and cod. The boat will have a supply of fishing gear.

The mother and cub populations are typically the best in June but can be seen during this time of year too; September is the best time to see male bears running after and feeding on chum salmon. For safety, we’ll always travel in small groups. The number of mothers and cubs varies each year. We cannot guarantee wildlife, however, this area has been a favorite of photographers for bear viewing for many summers. Our captain is experienced and knows the needs of a photographer. Our schedule will be flexible but dependent on weather. We can move by boat along the coastline to increase the number of bears we can locate and then go to shore to photograph them. Sometimes we’ll photograph off the skiff along the shore. The majority of the tour is spent in coves, fairly close to the shore, and we’ll anchor in a quiet cove each evening with calm waters.

A package including an itinerary will be mailed to each guest closer to trip departure time.
