Lumix G9 Reviews and Samples

It seems everyday I flip my MacBook Pro open I’m running into lots of Lumix G9 reviews and samples. This camera seems to getting lots of love from the folks who are shooting it. DPReview recently released studio images that you can compare to just about any camera made. The ones in the screenshot I’ve attached below are samples comparing the Lumix G9 to the GH5 and the Olympus OM-D Em-1 Markll and the Fuji X-T2. If you’re really curious how any of these cameras compare to other cameras you can simply choose different models in the drop down menu. Quite a slick and handy way to compare different models. Tech Radar Lumix G9ReviewLumix G9 Reviews and Samples

I am looking forward to you reviewing the G9 with the 100-400mm lens. I currently have the lens and use it with the GX8 and am generally satisfied with that combination for my wildlife shooting. I suspect you’re going to use the g9 with the new 200mm lens. That lens looks interesting but I wonder why Panasonic did not build the TC1.4 into the lens barrel as Canon has done with their new lens. Changing lenses while walking or riding a bike is not something I want to do, and that is why I use a zoom lens. But a Prime 200mm f2.8 with a built in TC of 1.4 and presumably with better IQ that the zoom at it maximum, would be very attractive to me. Switching the TC in and out without having to take the lens off camera would by really nice.

I have to say I also thought a built in teleconverter wold be nice when I saw the Canon. But it adds substantial weight and bulk. The real beautify of the new Leica 200mm F/2.8 (40mm equivalent) is the incredible small and compact size and lack of weight. Personally, I’ll most likely be continue shooting my 100-400mm and I’m very much looking forward to the coming 50-200mm F/2.8-4 Leica zoom. The 200mm is as much a statement as anything I believe. Panasonic wants photographers to know they are serious about their part in this game. And the new 200mm F/2.8 makes that very clear.

Be interested with your results Daniel the obvious like c-af performance at 20fps ,how much rolling shutter you incur when shooting e/s I already have mine pre ordered ,I am just glad I gave the videographer centric gh5 a miss looks like my judgement payed off ,also how well the pre capture compares to the olympus omd em1 mk2 ,I am getting excited by this release and now looks to be the real deal for stills the jpegs look the best in m43 cameras also the video capabilities are not to short of the gh5 it has the bits I am interested in video 4K 60p 180 FPS slow motion I miss these features on my olympus camera.
Also if you highlight your preference for wildlife shooting mechanical or electronic if you notice a difference between the 2 in quality.etc
Happy shooting Daniel I look forward to your reviews

      Daniel,
I’m surprised, I thought you did that like 2 months ago and some nice trip to shoot bears or something else for example.
But I’m staying tuned for your thoughts.

Not sure what you’re referring to Anastas. I did do a video and review of the GH5 but nothing to do with the G9. Is this the GH5 video you’re referring to?

I have a question for you Mr. Cox. With the increased size of the EVF image, now seems like a perfect time for Panasonic to introduce eye control focus like my Canon had back in the good old days of film cameras. This would be faster and much more intuitive than fiddling with a joystick under my right cheek.
You have talked with engineers. Anyone ever speak of this possibility?

Tom, I appreciate you stopping by to offer your thoughts. Yes, the eye control AF technology Canon introduced was interesting way back in the 90’s but it never caught on as you know. Why? I’m not really sure. My guess is that it’s due to the human eye moving around ALOT when looking through the viewfinder. From what I’m hearing from the people who travel with us, they love the Joystick. I personally prefer the touch screen option where I can quickly move the AF sensor with my thumb on the back of the EVF even with the camera to my eye. Interesting how innovative Canon was back when Nikon was still King. Now it’s Lumix, Olympus and Sony who are innovating like crazy. Who know’s maybe your idea will be reborn but unless they really figure out how to know where the photographer wants the focus point it will be hard to resell.

    Dan
I was looking for a second body so I don’t to worry about changing lens. I think I found just what I need. The GH 5 is better for video and I think the G9 would be great addition for wildlife and high speed action.

Looks good but I think I’ll wait on this until you have one and put it through its paces. Also, what is the surprise from Panasonic coming next week? GH5s? How will that compare with GH5 and GH9? I wish Panasonic had announced both new cameras at the same time.

Not sure what Panasonic is announcing next week. They’ve not told any of us so called Lumix Ambassadors. All I know is what I’ve heard from the web. One of my favorite sites is 43Rumors. Will let you know when I know more.
