The Natural Exposures Katmai Boat Tour was amazing. Our first trip to Katmai, but definitely not our last. Accessible only by plane or boat, Katmai is remote but teeming with wildlife. We had great photo opportunities to capture mother bears nursing cubs against a backdrop of fireweed, lone boar snoozing in the tall grass (pay attention Dan!) and second-season cubs knocking each other around. Other species included Bald Eagles, Seals, shorebirds and the elusive Sea Otter (shooting them is like playing Whack-a-Mole!). The “all-women” fishing excursion with Captain Chuck onboard the intrepid skiff: wine + women + fishing = epic fun. This tour should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Another season of fall brown bears in the wilds of Alaska has come to a close. I’ve just returned from one of my all-time favorite shoots and we had another great year. It started out pretty soggy with three days shooting in driving rain. Hey, as long as the Explorers want to get out and shoot I’m all in. Thankfully the rain subsided and we ended with four days of glorious sunshine. The rain gave us some moody opportunities we don’t typically get so it all worked to our advantage. Several new Explorers who were traveling with us for the first time and many old timers. All in al it was another great year in Alaska.
